Morris Street and Ridgedale Avenue Intersection Improvements

Morris County is receiving Federal funding through the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority's Local Safety Program for the design, construction, and construction inspection services for safety improvements at the Morris Street (CR 510) and Ridgedale Avenue intersection in Morristown. Proposed intersection improvements include replacement of the traffic signal system, reconstruction of sidewalks and curb ramps to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, lighting upgrades, widening Ridgedale Avenue for dual left-turn lanes and a dedicated right-turn lane, and Improved corner radii for truck and bus turning. The project is in the Preliminary Engineering phase.

Columbia Turnpike Bridge

Morris County, in coordination with the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) and the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), is conducting Local Preliminary Engineering for a new bridge to replace the existing structure over Black Brook. The new structure will increase safety for the traveling public by providing two travel lanes in each direction, outside shoulders on Columbia Turnpike eastbound and westbound, and a westbound sidewalk on the bridge.

Lenape Island Bridge

Morris County is conducting a Local Concept Development (LCD) study for the Lenape Island Bridge over Indian Lake on Lenape Trail in Denville. The study's purpose is to identify and propose improvements to the bridge. This project is federally funded by the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) working in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

NYS&W Bicycle Pedestrian Path

The NYS&W Bicycle and Pedestrian Path will run on the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railroad from River Drive in Pequannock to Mountain View Train Station in Wayne.

Valley Road Bridge

Somerset County and Morris County, in coordination with the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) and the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), are conducting an LCD study to determine appropriate improvements to the Valley Road Bridge. The project goals are to address the structural deficiencies of the bridge and increase safety for the traveling public.

Previous Projects

Chester Branch Railroad Rehabilitation ProjectConstruction vehicle shoveling dirt on a county road

Morris County was awarded $5.8 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to rehabilitate the Chester Branch Railroad. This project was completed in 2011.

East Hanover Avenue Corridor Traffic Study

The East Hanover Avenue Corridor Traffic Study analyzed and designed infrastructure improvements to address the existing and future traffic along East Hanover Avenue (650) from Speedwell Avenue (202) to Whippany Road (511).

Exxon Redevelopment Regional Traffic Study

The Exxon Redevelopment Regional Traffic Study was conducted to determine the impact and identify potential improvements to several intersections and roads, due to the proposed redevelopment of the former Exxon Site in Florham Park. Study Appendix

Freight Infrastructure and Land Use Analysis

The Freight Infrastructure and Land Use Analysis was a two year comprehensive study that examined the impact and role of the goods movement industry on the county’s transportation network, land use, and economy.

Kenvil Team Track Improvement Project

Morris County rehabilitated the County owned Kenvil Team Track in 2014. It is located in Roxbury Township on Berkshire Valley Road (CR 642), north of US 46. The team track serves as a public transload facility (merchandise is transferred from railroad to truck) that businesses may utilize.

Morris County Bicycle and Pedestrian Element

The Bicycle and Pedestrian Element of the Morris County Master Plan was adopted by the Morris County Planning Board in 1998. The plan identifies Morris County’s bicycle and pedestrian facilities by region and lists the resources available to people who bicycle and walk for recreation or commuting purposes.

Morris County Circulation Element

The new Circulation Element of the Morris County Master Plan was adopted by the Morris County Planning Board in 2018. The Circulation Element provides a comprehensive review of current conditions and transportation trends, and presents strategies to address current and future transportation needs. It will serve as a guiding document for transportation planning and investment in Morris County for the next 25 years.

NJ 124 Corridor Transit Access Improvement Study

The NJ 124 Corridor Transit Access Improvement Study provides analysis and recommendations for improving access to the three NJ Transit commuter rail stations in the NJ 124 Corridor: Chatham, Madison, and Convent Station.

Transportation Bulletins

Ten transportation bulletins were developed to discuss countywide and regional transportation issues, and to identify potential actions to improve transportation.

Walkable Community Workshops

Walkable Community Workshops are held to help identify measures that support and encourage pedestrian mobility, and reduce automobile dependence for local trips within a community.

Wharton Safe Routes to School Plan

Safe Routes to School is a program that aims to reduce congestion resulting from school-related traffic and promote healthier lifestyles and communities by enabling children to safely walk and bike to school.
