New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced Route 15 will have lane closures tonight in both directions as the Berkshire Valley Road Intersection Improvement project nears completion in Jefferson, Morris County. In addition, Berkshire Valley Road between Route 15 northbound and southbound will be closed and detoured Friday night in both directions.

Route 15 Lane Closures Tonight

Beginning at 8 p.m. tonight, Thursday, May 16 until 5 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, May 17, Route 15 northbound and southbound are scheduled to have two lanes closed between Phipps Road and the Bridge over the Rockaway River for restriping. At least one lane will be maintained during construction. After Memorial Day, there will be several nights of lane closures for final paving.

Berkshire Valley Road Detour Friday, May 17

Beginning at 8 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, May 17 until 5 a.m. Saturday, May 18, Berkshire Valley Road will be closed and detoured in both directions between Route 15 northbound and southbound. The Route 15 ramps to and from Berkshire Valley Road will remain open. The closure is necessary to shift traffic into the final configuration following the completion of work on the eastbound side of Berkshire Valley Road. The following detours will be in place tonight:

Berkshire Valley Road westbound detour:

  • Traffic on Berkshire Valley Road westbound wishing to cross Route 15 or take Route 15 southbound will be directed to turn right onto Route 15 northbound
  • Turn left onto Taylor Road
  • Turn left onto Route 15 southbound
  • Take the ramp onto Berkshire Valley Road westbound

Berkshire Valley Road eastbound detour:

  • Traffic on Berkshire Valley Road eastbound wishing to cross Route 15 or take Route 15 northbound will be directed to turn right onto Route 15 southbound
  • Stay right to take the Hawk Drive exit
  • Stay left to take Hawk Drive southbound
  • Turn left onto Route 15 northbound
  • Take the ramp onto Berkshire Valley Road eastbound

By 5 a.m. Saturday morning, Berkshire Valley Road will reopen with three lanes in the westbound direction and two lanes in the eastbound direction. There will be two dedicated left turns lanes and a through lane in the westbound direction and a single left turn lane and a single through lane in the eastbound direction.

The work is part of an $8 million federally funded project to enhance safety and improve the operation of the signalized intersection of Route 15 and Berkshire Valley Road in Jefferson Township. Improvements include adding a second left turn lane from Berkshire Valley Road southbound to Route 15 southbound, as well as widening and extending the Route 15 northbound through lane. The traffic signals will be replaced, ADA-compliant sidewalks will be constructed, and upgrades will be made to drainage and guiderail. The project is expected to be completed in spring 2024.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
