Morris County Recognizes Its Sheriff's Office Female OfficersWomen in law Enforcement

In recognition of National Policewoman Day, Morris County is highlighting the women serving in the Morris County Sheriff's Office.

The Morris County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Corrections currently has 130 officers, 19 of whom are female. Female officers perform all the duties expected of correctional police officers, ranging from prisoner management to relief officer. Senior officers may be assigned more permanent roles, including positions in payroll, special programs, sanitation, security in the maximum-security unit, intake, and professional standards. The most recent promotion of a female correctional police officer was Sharon Fielding, who attained the rank of sergeant.

The Morris County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Law Enforcement has 117 sworn law enforcement officers, 22 of whom are female. The Bureau has a strong female leadership presence, with at least one woman represented at each rank, from Sheriff’s Officer to Chief.

Female officers serve in various roles in the agency, including but not limited to:

  • K9 handler
  • Crime scene detective
  • Marine police
  • Motors unit
  • Community outreach
  • Hope One and Hope Hub
  • Court protection and security
  • Legal process
  • Emergency Medical Technician in the Special Operations Group
  • Firearms instructor
  • Honor guard
  • Bike patrol
  • Bloodstain and fingerprint analysis experts

Currently, one female officer is on active duty with the New Jersey National Guard. Women from both bureaus have earned numerous medals and commendations, including Lifesaving Awards and recognition.

“Our women in law enforcement enhance the operation of the agency. They serve proudly, and I am proud of them.  They consistently demonstrate professionalism and high performance in all they do,” said Sheriff James M. Gannon.

Approximately 17 percent of sworn law enforcement personnel in the Morris County Sheriff’s Office are women. By comparison, the national average for women in police service was 12 percent in 2023.
