Riverdale-Butler: Rail Crossing Repairs to Start Monday on Hamburg Turnpike in Riverdale

Necessary Safety Work Will Require Road Closure and Detours

Rail Crossing sign(JPG, 5KB)A railroad crossing rehabilitation project that will require the closure and detour of Hamburg Turnpike, or County Route 694, is scheduled to start this Monday, May 22, in Riverdale, the New Jersey Department of Transportation announced today.

Beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, May 22, until 7 p.m. Friday, May 26, the two-way traffic on Hamburg Turnpike is scheduled to be closed at the crossing between Morris Avenue/Post Lane and Haycock Avenue.

The existing railroad crossing for the New York Susquehanna & Western Railway will be removed and replaced with a new concrete crossing and asphalt approach.

  • Hamburg Turnpike Westbound Detour:
  • Motorists will be directed onto Ringwood Avenue/Route 511 Alt. northbound
  • Continue on Ringwood Avenue and make a left onto Union Avenue/Route 511
  • Make the next left onto I-287 southbound
  • Take I-287 southbound Exit 53 onto Hamburg Turnpike
  • Hamburg Turnpike Eastbound Detour:
  • Motorists will be directed onto I- 287 northbound and take Exit 55 to Ringwood Avenue/Route 511
  • Make a left on Ringwood Avenue/Route 511 Alt. southbound
  • Continue on Ringwood Avenue/Route 511 Alt. southbound and make a right onto Hamburg TurnpikeNJ DOT logo

The traffic detour will be coordinated with the local police. If work is completed earlier, the roadway will be reopened accordingly.

In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossing in Riverdale, the existing crossings will be replaced with new concrete crossings and new asphalt approaches. This federally-funded project is included within NJDOT's railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.
