Lanes to be Narrowed in Riverdale to Allow Wider Construction Zone
The New Jersey Department of Transportation has announced that there will be overnight lane closures tonight, Sept. 9, on Route 23 southbound to implement a traffic shift, as the culvert repair project in Riverdale, advances. The work originally was scheduled for August 23.

Beginning at 9 p.m. and lasting until 4 a.m., NJDOT's contractor IEW, will close two lanes on Route 23 southbound to set up a traffic shift to the left. The lane shift will begin just past traffic signal at Cotluss Road and extend for approximately one-quarter mile to just before where Cotluss Road rejoins Route 23.
The shift will reduce the left and middle lanes of Route 23 southbound to 11-feet wide, while the right lane will remain 12-feet wide to accommodate truck traffic. Three travel lanes will be maintained after the shift and the shoulder will remain closed.
The lane shift allows the construction zone, on the right side of the road, to be widened to accommodate additional equipment for the continuation of the culvert repair work. The new configuration will remain in place for approximately two months.
The $700,000 state-funded Route 23 Riverdale Borough culvert maintenance project is repairing the culvert over an unnamed tributary of the Pequannock River that is in poor condition. Construction is expected to be completed in late fall.
Precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
