Morris Residents, Schools, Businesses: Apply for 2018 Gov's Environmental Excellence Awards Program

Morris County's leaders in environmental excellence, in the public and private sectors, are encouraged to show-off our county's green achievements by submitting nominations for the annual Governor's Environmental Excellence Awards program for 2018.

The excellence awards honor outstanding environmental performance, programs and projects from around the state.

Residents of Morris County value environmental consciousness, and understand the benefits of protecting our precious natural lands and clean water supply, and the benefits of bringing that consciousness to our schools and work places,'' said Freeholder Director Doug Cabana, who encouraged Morris residents to participate in the 2018 state awards program.

Governor's Environmental Excellence Awards are made to persons, businesses, institutions, communities, organizations, educators and youths who have made significant contributions to protecting the environment in New Jersey.

Since its establishment in 2000, the program has honored 170 winners, including several from Morris County, for their environmental achievements.

Morris County government won a 2014 Governor's Award in the land conservation category for the Morris County Flood Mitigation Program. The Whippany River Watershed Action Committee won in 2013 in the water conservation category for its watershed protection and restoration efforts.

Parsippany based Wyndham Worldwide was named the winner in the Sustainable Businesses Category at the 2015 Governor's Environmental Excellence Awards ceremony held at the State Museum in Trenton.

Honoring our environmental leaders every year reaffirms to all that New Jersey is committed to protecting the environment and setting a national example by reducing the impacts of climate change, repairing water infrastructure and improving sustainability, said state Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Catherine R. McCabe.

Nominations may be submitted through Friday, Oct. 5 in these categories:

  • Clean Air
  • Water Resources
  • Healthy Ecosystems and Habitats
  • Innovative Technology
  • Land Conservation
  • Healthy and Sustainable Communities
  • Healthy and Sustainable Businesses
  • Environmental Education: Educator-Led and Student-Led Projects.

The excellence awards program is sponsored by the DEP, New Jersey Infrastructure Bank (formerly known as the N.J. Environmental Infrastructure Trust), and the New Jersey Corporation for Advanced Technology.

Completed applications for the 2018 awards program are due to the DEP by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5.
