Morris Residents: Flu Season Tips from Atlantic Health and the CDC

Published on January 03, 2019

With flu season surging in New Jersey, here are some tips to keep you and your family healthy from Dr. Jason Kessler, Chief of Infectious Diseases at Atlantic Health System's Morristown Medical Center:(JPG, 5KB)

  • Get yourself and family vaccinated with the flu vaccine. This doesn't always prevent the flu, but can shorten the duration or severity.
  • The flu vaccine is also safe for children. Work with your child's doctor to determine an appropriate schedule.
  • Don't go work when you have flu symptoms (fever, muscle aches, vomiting, GI symptoms), and encourage others not to come to work if they are sick.
  • Practice frequent hand washing. Wash your hands with an antibacterial soap for 30 seconds under warm water multiple times each day.
  • If you have a weakened immune system, consider wearing a mask to protect yourself from exposure.

Due to increased seasonal flu and intestinal viral illness in our communities, please do not visit patients in the hospital if you or members of your household are sick, especially with symptoms of upper respiratory (coughing, sneezing, congestion) or gastrointestinal (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) illness.

Also, check out flu symptoms from the CDC and some good information from the Morris County Office of Health Management.
