Morris Prosecutor: Kinnelon High School's DWI Prevention Effort

KINNELON HIGH SCHOOL HOSTS "EVERY 15 MINUTES

Students from Kinnelon High School recently hosted Morris County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Brad Seabury and Morris County Presiding Municipal Court Judge Andrew Wubbenhorst as participants in "Every 15 Minutes," a two-day driving-while-intoxicated prevention program that targets high school juniors and seniors.

The program's goal is to make teens mindful of the potentially, dangerous consequences of drinking alcohol and texting while driving, and employs realistic exercises to reinforced the idea that death can be is a very real consequence of drunk driving and distracted driving.

The Kinnelon program, held on Thursday, April 12, included a mock-vehicle crash, a mock funeral, and a mock courtroom sentencing of a "drunk" driver. Students actively participated as both victims and the driver.

During the courtroom scene, Seabury presented a mock sentencing argument before Judge Wubbenhorst. Attorney John Paul Velez represented the student defendant. The trio crafted a courtroom scene that demonstrated the potentially extreme consequences -- tho themselves and others -- of irresponsible behind-the-wheel behavior.
