Morris Parks: Experience Maple Sugaring at the Great Swamp Outdoor Ed Center

Demonstrations On Weekends in January and February

The trees are tapped and the firewood is chopped. That means it's time for the 2018 maple sugaring season at the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham Township.

You are invited to participate in fascinating, hour-long maple sugaring demonstrations on the following dates: Jan. 20, 21, 27, and 28, plus Feb. 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25. There are sessions at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on each of those days.

Experience the entire maple sugaring process from tapping the tree to pancake-topping treat. Identify and tap maple trees, collect the flowing sap, and witness syrup making over a wood-fired evaporator. Best of all, taste-test the Great Swamp's own homemade syrup.

People don't look at the maple syrup on their table the same way after experiencing the maple sugaring demonstration. They begin to appreciate the quality differences, as well as the process required to make this tasty treat, said Jenny Gaus-Myers, Assistant Director of Education and Interpretive Programs. The demos are a fun and educational experience for everyone.
