Morris County Road Resurfacing: Boonton and Lincoln Park Added for Early October

road work sign(JPG, 15KB)A flurry of late summer Morris County road resurfacing is underway across the county as part of the Board of Freeholders' aggressive 2017 paving effort, with two more projects, in Boonton and Lincoln Park, added to the list of upcoming work and set to start in early-to-mid October.

The county has awarded contracts for a nearly mile-long section of West Main Street/Hawkins Place in Boonton and a smaller nearly half-mile connected stretch of Main Street, Chapel Hill Road and Comly Road in Lincoln Park.

Work should start during the first two weeks of October for these two projects.

We are moving ahead with a series of projects that should continue to improve the county's road infrastructure to make driving safer and more comfortable for our residents, visitors, and the many people who come to work and school in our county,'' said Freeholder John Cesaro, the county governing board's liaison on roads and bridges.

These projects will cause temporary inconvenience for many motorists but we are working closely with our contractors and local police to cause minimum inconvenience, do the job right, and get it done quickly,'' Freeholder Cesaro added.

As part of the countywide resurfacing program, contractors have started preliminary work on sections of Powerville Road in Boonton Township, Meyersville Road in Long Hill and Chatham Township, Valley Road in Long Hill, and Parsippany Road in Parsippany and Hanover.

In addition, work will start soon on the resurfacing of three major and heavily traveled intersections: Columbia Turnpike and Park Avenue in Hanover and Morris townships; Hanover and Ridgedale avenues, also in Hanover and Morris townships; and Myrtle Avenue and Wooton Street in Boonton.

Moris County Freeholders road resurfacing signsThe Boonton intersection is first on the list. Work on all three busy intersections is scheduled at night, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Motorists should expect delays and possible detours in connection with each of the resurfacing projects. Bicyclists should seek alternate routes, especially to avoid milled roads.

Storm basin and ADA ramp work has begun on the following:

  • Parsippany Road, Parsippany: The 2.1-mile project runs from East Halsey Road to Whippany Road. Tilcon is the contractor. The bid price is $678,000. The project includes storm drain work, ADA ramps, milling, paving and striping. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Motorists should expect delays.
  • Meyersville Road, Chatham and Long Hill: The 2.6-mile project runs from just west of New Vernon Road in Long Hill to Fairmount Avenue in Chatham. The contractor is Top Line Construction. The bid price is $620,754. The project includes storm basin work, ADA ramps, milling, paving and striping. Work hours in Long Hill are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Expect delays.
  • Valley Road, Long Hill: The 3.4-mile project runs from Mountain Avenue to the Somerset County line. The contractor is Schifano Construction. The bid price is $1.1 million. The project includes storm basin work, ADA ramps, milling, paving and striping. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Expect delays and at least one detour.
  • Powerville Road, Boonton Township: The 1.7-mile project runs from Rockaway Valley Road to the Kinnelon Borough border. The contractor is Schifano Construction. The bid price is $437,176. The project includes storm basin work, milling, paving and striping. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Expect delays. (JPG, 11KB)

Projects expected to start soon:

  • Whippany Road, Hanover: The 1.4-mile project will run from Mt. Vernon Way to Oak Ridge Drive. Tilcon is the contractor. The bid price is $622,200. The project includes storm drains, ADA ramps, milling, paving and striping. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Motorists should expect delays.
  • Intersections in Boonton, Hanover and Morris Township: Milling and resurfacing projects will start in Boonton, at Myrtle Ave and Wooton Street starting Sept. 5. The contractor is Tilcon. Once done in Boonton, work will move to two of the busiest intersections in Morris County: Park Avenue and Columbia Turnpike and then Ridgedale Avenue and East Hanover Avenue €“ both intersections connect Hanover and Morris Township. The bid price for all three intersections is $383,300. Work will be done from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Expect delays. WORK WILL BE DONE AT NIGHT, 8 P.M. TO 5 A.M.
  • Main Street, Chapel Hill Road and Comly Road, Lincoln Park: The project totals about one-half mile and includes Main Street, from Boonton Turnpike to Comly Road; Chapel Hill Road, from Boonton Turnpike to Main Street; and Comly Road, from Boonton Turnpike to Main Street. Mark Paving Co. is the contractor. The bid price is $275,080. The project includes ADA ramps, milling, paving and striping. Work hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., but start at 7 a.m. on paving days. Expect delays.
  • West Main Street/Hawkins Place, Boonton: The 1-mile project runs from Fairview Avenue to Boonton Avenue. The contractor is J.A. Alexander. The bid price is $395,694. The project includes ADA ramps, storm basins, milling, paving and striping. Expect delays. Work hours will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The 2017 county paving program is a continuation of the Freeholder Board's priority policy over the past several years of maintaining the county's high quality road network.

Overall, the Morris County Board of Freeholders have targeted upgrades to some 32 miles of county roads across 15 municipalities at a total cost of about $9 million in 2017. This effort is in addition to any ongoing or planned local or state road-improvement projects.

Efforts have been made to coordinate contractors' schedules and roadwork with municipalities, school districts, and utilities.

Completed 2017 county resurfacing projects include portions of:

  • James Street: Morristown and Morris Twp.
  • Jacksonville Road: Montville, Lincoln Park, and Pequannock
  • Mountain Ave: Long Hill
  • Loantaka Way: Chatham Twp.
  • Myrtle Ave: Boonton
  • Prospect Street/Reservoir Avenue: Boonton and Randolph
  • Berkshire Valley Road, Jefferson
  • South Hillside Avenue, Roxbury
  • Fairmount Road, Washington Township
