Morris County Recognizes Domestic Violence Awareness Month

County Commissioners Present Proclamation During Public Meeting

Domestic Violence Awareness Month The Morris County Board of County Commissioners declared October 2024 "Domestic Violence Awareness Month" and presented a framed proclamation to JBWS President and CEO Diane Williams during last night’s work session in Morristown.

"One in four women and one in nine men will experience domestic violence, and about 10 percent of children are exposed to it annually. These children suffer trauma that can last a lifetime," said Commissioner Director Christine Myers. "Recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month is vital to ensuring the safety of our families and children."

JBWS, established in 1976, has grown into a full-service nonprofit that provides safety, support, and solutions for survivors of abuse. In 2023, JBWS handled approximately 4,685 helpline calls, offered legal advocacy to 1,143 people, and conducted 940 Crisis Response Team interventions at local police stations and hospitals.

In partnership with Morris County agencies, JBWS founded the Morris Family Justice Center in 2016. Located at the county’s Administration and Records Building, the center offers a centralized hub where survivors can access counseling, legal and immigration assistance, child services, and more. The center is one of only two in New Jersey and is recognized as a best practice by the U.S. Department of Justice.

In 2023, 599 adults and children received comprehensive services from multiple agencies within the Morris Family Justic Center, a statistic that increased significantly from 470 in 2022.
