Morris County Heritage Commission Offering History Grants

The Morris County Heritage Commission, an advisory body of the Morris County Board of Freeholders, has received a grant of $43,520 from the New Jersey Historical Commission to provide re-grants for local history projects and for general operating needs of history organizations.

The re-grant program supports efforts to increase appreciation, knowledge, and preservation of Morris County's history.
History organizations, such as historical societies, museums, and historic preservation societies are eligible to apply for either General Operating Support or a Project Grant between $1,000 and $7,000.
Fraternal, veterans', education, youth and ethnic organizations are invited to apply for project grants for which a minimum of $500 but no more than $5,000 will be awarded. No cash match is required. Applications are due Dec. 4 and awards will be announced the week of Jan. 20, 2018.

Examples of eligible history projects include exhibit catalogs, organizational and information brochures, collections catalogs, exhibit mounting materials, and conservation of photographs and documents. Also, funds may be used for consultants to prepare historic site nominations, historic site preservation planning documents, and organizational long-range and A.D.A. compliance plans.
History project grants are not intended for rehabilitation, preservation, or other work on historic buildings. These projects may be eligible for funding from the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust Fund (www.morrispreservation.org).
(JPG, 283KB)General operating grants are intended to assist history organizations in meeting expenses necessary to keep historic sites or museums open to the public. These costs can include insurance, heat, electric, and other utility bills. Costs associated with maintaining an internet presence and security system also may be included in the proposal.
Morris County-based nonprofit organizations having collections or archives of historic integrity, but whose activities are not history-based, are can apply for history project funds. The Heritage Commission welcomes re-grant applications from nonprofit agencies and organizations such as veterans' organizations, youth groups, schools, libraries, fraternal organizations, men's/women's clubs, and ethnic/cultural groups whose primary mission is not history.
Public programs, archival projects, conservation of textiles and exhibit curatorial consultant expenses are among the types of projects eligible.
