Morris County Freeholders and Prosecutor to Observe Crime Victims Rights Week with Proclamation in Madison

National Crime Victims' Rights Week is the Week of April 8

(JPG, 12KB)Since 1981, National Crime Victims' Rights Week has been celebrated each in April, in Morris County and the nation, as a time of remembrance for the victims of violent crimes.

This year, National Crime Victims' Rights Week begins on Sunday, April 8 and ends on Saturday, April 14. The theme of this year's observance is Expand the Circle: Reach All Victims. The goal is to educate all residents about victimization, the effect victimization has on individuals, families, friends and the community, and to promote laws, policies, and programs to help victims of crime.

On Wednesday evening (April 11), the Morris County Board of Freeholders will present a proclamation to Prosecutor Fredric M. Knapp to officially recognize Crime Victims' Rights Week through Morris County.

This presentation will be made in Madison, at the Borough Hall/Hartley Dodge Memorial Building during the Freeholders' public meeting to be held in the Rose City.

"It is extremely important to remember the victims of crimes, to call attention especially to the many unnamed victims who quietly carry the mental and physical scars of being victimized,'' said Freeholder Tom Mastrangelo, the Freeholder Board's liaison on matters of law and public safety. We offer our full support to these brave people, to do our best to see that they get justice and to make them whole again.

This year, for the first time, the New Jersey Victim Witness Coordinators' Association -- a statewide committee of victim witness coordinators from each of the state's 21 counties, has partnered with the County Prosecutors Association of New Jersey to sponsor a statewide speaker series on sexual assault for National Crime Victims' Rights Week.

I am proud, as President of the County Prosecutors Association of New Jersey, that we are providing these important programs recognizing the rights of crime victims. New Jersey has been at the forefront from the inception of recognizing the rights of survivors and their families, said Prosecutor Knapp.

Events in North Jersey will be held on Thursday, April 12 at Kean University in the STEM Building from 9:15am-10:45am, and will continue at Montclair State University's Memorial Auditorium from 2:30-4:30 p.m.

The keynote speaker for these programs, is Jeffrey Bucholtz, the Director of the California based agency We End Violence. His program is entitled Get Real about Sex, Consent, & Violence.
