Montville Bridge Repair Prompts Bloomfield Ave Lane Closure Tonight

The right, westbound lane of Bloomfield Avenue (Route 159) in Montville will be closed tonight at the Passaic River bridge as an Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) bridge-deck repair and pavement overlay project begins, the The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced today.
The right lane closure will begin at 8 p.m., tonight, Friday, September 18 and remain closed until 7 a.m., tomorrow, as a NJDOT contractor insalls a concrete barrier. The closure will create a work zone to remove the existing deck surface of the bridge, make concrete deck repairs, and apply the UHPC.
(PNG, 15KB)The work is expected to be completed this fall. The $2.7 million state-funded UHPC project is part of a pilot program that is testing the effectiveness of using UHPC as a bridge deck overlay to increase deck service life, enhance structural capacity, and reduce future maintenance.
While UHPC is currently being used for joint repairs and other maintenance, this is the first time UHPC is being used as a bridge deck overlay in New Jersey. This contract will perform deck and joint repairs in addition to the application and performance evaluation of the UHPC as a thin-bonded overlay on existing bridge decks.
The pilot program is being carried out in two contracts. One contract began in August and will resurface the I-295/Route 130 northbound bridge deck over Mantua Creek in West Deptford, Gloucester County.
The contract covering the Montville bridge will also resurface bridge decks along the Newark-Jersey City Turnpike/Route 508 ramp to I-280 westbound in Kearny, Hudson County and the Route 57 bridge over Hances Brook in Mansfield, Warren County.
Variable Message Signs are being used to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
