Governor Murphy Issues New Executive Order: Extends Restrictions on Public Activities-Social Gatherings

Published on March 21, 2020

Intended to Further Limit Spread of Coronavirus

A new Executive Order (Read the full Executive Order)(PDF, 501KB) issued today, Saturday, March 21, by New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy further expands restrictions on public outings, and requires all New Jersey residents to remain at home or their place of residence with limited exceptions.

Gatherings of individuals for parties, celebrations, and other social events have been prohibited.

The brick-and-mortar premises of all non-essential retail businesses must close to the public. Essential retail businesses are excluded and may remain open during their normal business hours (see the full list in Section 6 of the Executive Order Number 107).

Also, state residents are asked not to travel to their secondary homes at the Jersey Shore because the local infrastructure is not prepared for such an influx of people.

Here is a summary of some key points of the Executive Order(PDF, 501KB)

All New Jersey residents are required to stay at home unless they are:

  • Obtaining goods or services from essential retail businesses;
  • Obtaining takeout food or beverages;
  • Seeking medical attention, essential social services, or assistance from law enforcement or emergency services;
  • Visiting family or persons with whom a resident has a close personal relationship;
  • g to or performing their job;
  • Walking, running, operating a wheelchair, or engaging in outdoor activities with immediate family, caretakers, or romantic partners while following best social distancing practices;
  • Leaving home for an educational, religious, or political reason;
  • Leaving home because of a reasonable fear for health or safety;
  • Leaving home at direction of law enforcement or government.

Also, residents who must travel are asked to avoid public transportation unless they have no feasible choice.
