Freeholders Honor Eight Outstanding Eagle and Gold Award Scouts

REPRESENTING TROOPS IN DENVILLE, HANOVER. MORRISTOWN, RANDOLPH, ROXBURY AND WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP

The Morris County Board of Freeholders has honored eight Eagle and Gold Award Scouts from across Morris County for a series of ambitious scout projects that assisted local towns, neighborhoods, fire departments, and local churches and temples, in projects that each required hundreds of hours of volunteer efforts by the scouts and their volunteer project teams.

The freeholders, on June 14 in Morristown, presented the county certificates of achievements to

  • Victoria Lynn Carson, Troop 690, Long Valley
  • Khang Huynh Lieu, Troop 155, Hanover Township
  • Thomas Francis McBride IV, Troop 155, Hanover Township
  • Sean Patrick Armstrong, Troop 17, Denville
  • Gregory A. Jones, Troop 17, Denville
  • Aldo Joseph Bangiola, Troop 34, Morristown
  • Mark Salotti, Troop 188, Landing
  • Aleks Murauskas, Troop 53, Randolph

It is really a privilege for the Board of Freeholders to celebrate the efforts of these young men and women who took it upon themselves to make positive impacts on their respective communities,'' said Freeholder Director Doug Cabana. They, obviously, are the future leaders of Morris County, and we salute them.''

Each of the scouts who received county certificates have impressive personal resumes, featuring outstanding family, school, scouting, and personal achievements. The following is a snapshot of their Eagle and Gold Award Scout projects:

  • Victoria Lynn Carson is a graduate of West Morris Central High School and attends Syracuse University. For her project, Victoria created a time capsule of Long Valley to help promote town unity. Victoria created a website and flyers to advertise the project, interviewed Washington Township officials, surveyed more than 350 students, took photos of the town, researched the town's history, and sought donations of artifacts to be preserved.

  • Khang Huynh Lieu: is a junior at Whippany Park High School. Khang is involved with Lin Son Temple, a Buddhist Congregation in Stanhope. For his project, he led a group in remodeling the lower level of the temple. The work included painting, wallpapering and replacing ceiling lights, as part of a total remodeling effort.

  • Thomas Francis McBride IV is a junior at Whippany Park High School. For his Eagle project, Tommie refurbished the storage room of the Howard's Mission warehouse for the non-profit Gellman Foundation, which collects and distributes items for the homeless communities of NJ and NY. He led volunteers in cleaning the space, prepping and painting the walls, assembling storage racks, tables and bins, and reorganizing the space.

  • Sean Patrick Armstrong is a junior at Morris Knolls High School. For his Eagle project, Sean repaired and beautified the John F. Hogan Memorial Park in Denville, which suffered extensive damage from Hurricane Irene and Superstorm Sandy. Sean and his team created and installed bat and birdhouses, built and installed large planter boxes, planted small evergreens and flowers, replaced the rotted border area at the gazebo, and attached plexi-glass doors to the bulletin board to protect announcements.

  • Gregory A. Jones is a 2016 graduate of Morris Knolls High School and current student at County College of Morris, working towards a degree in criminal justice. For his Eagle project, Greg built a 250-foot guardrail at Zeek Field in Denville to keep cars off the grass and to protect the new turf field. He worked with the Denville DPW, applied for a construction permit, and led a group of adults and scouts in the project.

  • Aldo Joe'' Bangiola is a graduating student at Morristown High School. For his Eagle project, he built a brick plaza in front of the Assumption Church in Morristown, where he is an active member. Joe worked for a year on the project, obtaining needed town permits, raising money, and leading a team of 45 youths and adults.

  • Mark Salotti is a graduating senior at Roxbury High School. For his Eagle project, he gave back to his town by planning and executing the beautification of Succasunna Field, with a focal point of renovating the concession stand. Mark's project included cleaning, sanding, power washing, and painting the stand, while replacing mulch and installing railroad ties.

  • Aleks Murauskas is a graduate of Randolph High School and a current student at McGill University in Montreal, where he is studying software engineering. For his Eagle project, Aleks mapped the fire hydrants in Randolph and compiled them into a database that was loaded into the township's GPS-enabled emergency vehicles. This enables fire companies to quickly locate hydrants, enhancing their responses to fires.
