COVID-19: Governor's Executive Order on NJ Transit and Private Transit Companies

Governor Phil Murphy has signed Executive Order Number 125, imposing additional mitigation requirements on NJ TRANSIT and all private transit carriers to limit the spread of COVID-19.(JPG, 638KB)

The new measures, which go into effect at 8 p.m. today, Monday, April 13 directs the following:

1. NJ TRANSIT

• NJ TRANSIT workers may limit occupancy by passengers at 50 percent of maximum vehicle capacity on trains, buses and light rail lines;
• Require infection control practices, such as coughing and sneezing etiquette;
• Arrange for contactless pay options but consider populations with no internet service;
• Arrange for back door entry on buses and take seats out of service near the bus operator;
• Require frequent sanitation of high-touch areas like restrooms and waiting areas;
• Place conspicuous signage alerting workers and customers to required six feet of physical distance;
• Require workers and customers to wear cloth face coverings except if it would inhibit a person's health or if the riders is under two years of age
• Require workers to wear gloves when in contact with customers.
• NJ TRANSIT must provide face coverings and gloves for their workers;
• If a customer refuses to wear a cloth face covering for non-medical reasons, workers may decline entry to the individual;
• Where an individual declines to wear a face covering due to a medical condition, workers shall not be required to require the individual to produce medical documentation.(JPG, 10KB)

2. OTHER CARRIERS

There are three different categories of private carrier companies covered by the Order:

• Private Carriers, contracted by NJ TRANSIT for bus and light rail service;
• Unaffiliated Private Carriers, who run their own bus lines;
• Paratransit Private Carriers, who NJ TRANSIT has entered into contracts with for the provision of Access Link paratransit service.
