COVID-19: Governor Lifts 50 Percent Ridership Capacity on NJ Transit -- Effective Wednesday Evening

Also Orders All Special Elections Suspended Until November

Gov. Phil Murphy signed an Executive Order today which will lift the 50 percent ridership capacity on NJ Transit private-carrier buses, trains, light rail vehicles, and Access Link vehicles starting on Wednesday, July 15, at 8 p.m..

At the same time, he directed that face coverings are now required in all NJ TRANSIT and private-carrier indoor transit stations and also outdoor stations, such as those on the Morris-Essex and Montclair-Boonton rail lines, when physical distancing is not possible.

"As more New Jerseyans begin getting back to their jobs, we are seeing an increase in ridership, which is approaching 50 percent of maximum capacity of those vehicles,'' said the Governor. " We want to be surethat people are able to get to their jobs and the system also continues to operate as efficiently as possible.

Regarding face coverings, Gov. Murphy said the diligence of most state residents to continue to wear face coverings and to employ physical distancing has made a positive impact on the state's COVID numbers. With more people using mass transit, he said it is imperative to be as vigilant as possible with those practices, he said.

"Please do it for yourself and fellow riders, and for themwomen and men who make your trips possible,'' said the Governor, referring to NJ Transit services.

Regarding elections, the Governor issued as Executive Order that does the following:

Suspends the requirement that municipal and county political parties hold reorganizational meetings either today or tomorrow;
