CCM to Hold Virtual Open Houses on Advanced Manufacturing Apprenticeships

County College of Morris is offering students an opportunity to embark on well-paying careers in advanced manufacturing by taking on-the-job training through its CareerAdvance USA apprenticeship program.(JPG, 97KB)

CCM's Center for Workforce Development, which is overseeing the program, has scheduled a series of virtual open houses where potential students can learn more about the boot camp and apprenticeship program.

The open houses take place:

Wednesday, July 29, at 12 noon

Wednesday, August 12, at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Wednesday, August 26, at 5 p.m.

How Does the Program Work?

After completing an internship, apprentices can pursue jobs such as a computer numerical control operator, manual machinist, shop technician or CAD drafter. The average starting salary is $70,000 and job prospects are excellent.

The first step to becoming an apprentice in the CareerAdvance USA program is to take part in a boot camp to learn the basic skills needed for employment in advanced manufacturing. Totaling 180-hours, the boot camp covers all of the advanced manufacturing basics and gives students the opportunity to earn college credits over a four- to 10-week time frame.

An OSHA 10 General Industry Completion Card, up to five National Institute of Metalworking Skills certifications, and a SolidWorks certification are awarded upon successful completion of the certification exam and required hours.

While the apprenticeship program is offered at no cost, boot camp costs $3,750 plus supplies. Scholarships are available and payment plans are another option.

CCM was awarded a four-year $4 million CareerAdvance USA grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to lead a consortium of New Jersey community colleges to create successful apprenticeship models in advanced manufacturing.

Serving as a major resource for the program is the brand new 31,500-square-foot Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Center on the CCM campus that will be opening this fall. That center, featuring state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, was designed to meet the demand for trained employees.

In the next decade advanced manufacturing will need to fill an estimated 3.4 million jobs with the majority of those positions being related to the pending retirement of baby boomers. Along with good job prospects, the field pays well with an average starting salary of $70,000 after completing an apprenticeship.

The CCM apprenticeship program is approved by New Jersey Department of Labor and is listed on the New Jersey Training Opportunities website.
