Morris County Prosecutor's Office to Partner in Free Naloxone Distribution Initiative throughout New Jersey

Published on June 13, 2019

On Tuesday, June 18, 2019, participating pharmacies across the State of New Jersey will be making Naloxone, which is an opioid-overdose reversal drug, available for free and without a prescription, to anyone requesting the same. Inquiring individuals, who can remain anonymous, will be entitled to one (1) free dose each, on a first come, first- serve basis.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, New Jersey Attorney General S. Gurbir Grewal, the Office of the New Jersey Coordinator for Addiction Responses and Enforcement Strategies (NJ CARES), and the New Jersey Department of Human Services are sponsoring this free Naloxone program. The Morris County Prosecutor's Office, the Dover Police Department, and Dover Mayor James Dodd are partnering with the Walgreens in Dover for this important initiative.

Governor Murphy announced this initiative as an effort to continue the fight against the Heroin and Opioid Epidemic. Information concerning addiction treatment and recovery will also be provided with the dose of Naloxone.

A list of participating pharmacies, organized by county, is available at this link:

The participating pharmacies in Morris County are:

Walgreens located at 100 E McFarlan Street, Dover

Walmart located at 40 International Drive S., Flanders

Rite AID located at 213 South Street, Morristown

Morris County Prosecutor Fredric Knapp stated, Governor Murphy's pilot program to make Naloxone free and more accessible is a great step forward in our fight against the Heroin and Opioid Epidemic. Since 2015, there have been over 600 instances of Naloxone deployment by members of law enforcement in Morris County. Without access to this reversal drug, the number of fatalities from overdoses would have been much higher. We are excited to participate in this initiative and hope members of our community will take advantage of the free and potentially life-saving drug.
