Morris County Prosecutor's Office and Chester Police Department Confirm Fire Investigation

Morris County Prosecutor Fredric M. Knapp, Morris County Prosecutor's Office Acting Chief of Investigations Christoph Kimker and Chester Police Department Chief Thomas Williver confirm the investigation of a fire which occurred on North Road in Chester Township on November 16, 2019.

At approximately 3:18 p.m., police and fire officials were dispatched to North Road on a report of a residential fire. Responders located an active fire at a dwelling. The preliminary investigation has revealed that the fire resulted in one (1) fatality. The Morris County Medical Examiner's Office has determined the manner of death to be accidental. The investigation remains ongoing and the identity of the individual will not be released at this time.

At this time, the cause of the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature and the Morris County Prosecutor's Office does not anticipate any criminal charges being filed. There is no danger to the community at this time.

Prosecutor Knapp would like to thank the Chester Police Department, Chester Volunteer Fire Company, Chester First Aid Squad, the Morris County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, the Morris County Prosecutor's Office Arson and Environmental Crimes Unit, the Morris County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit, and all other mutual aid providers for their efforts in this matter.
