Morris County Surrogate Heather Darling concluded her distinguished term last week as President of the Constitutional Officers Association of New Jersey (COANJ), a role she has held for the past year. Surrogate Darling passed the reins to Somerset County Clerk Steve Peter, who was sworn in as the new President during COANJ's annual conference at the Seaview Golf Club in Galloway, NJ. Darling's tenure was marked by her commitment to strengthening relationships among New Jersey’s Constitutional Officers, enhancing communication, and advocating for the essential services they provide to their communities.
The annual convention, held from October 7-9, 2024, was a resounding success. It brought together elected officials from across the state, including Sheriffs, Clerks, Registers, and Surrogates, to discuss best practices and share insights on improving public service. Notable sessions at the conference included expert-led discussions on modernization efforts in county offices, new technology in recordkeeping, and the future of probate law. Attendees also had the opportunity to network and exchange ideas about how to better serve their respective counties, making the event both informative and collaborative.
In her closing remarks, Surrogate Darling expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve as COANJ President and praised the dedication of her fellow Constitutional Officers. She noted that the work of COANJ is vital in maintaining the public’s trust in county government and thanked the association for its ongoing support throughout her term. With the leadership baton now in the hands of Steve Peter, COANJ is set to continue its mission of promoting excellence and collaboration among New Jersey’s county officials.
