The New Jersey Department of Transportation has announced the closure and detour of the Route 23 southbound ramp to I-287 southbound for emergency drainage repairs in Riverdale.

Morris Roads: Route 23 Ramp to I-287 Closed in Riverdale for Emergency Repairs

Repairs are needed to replace a collapsed drainage pipe, which caused a sinkhole in the ramp on Saturday afternoon, March 14.  The ramp was closed immediately and crews have been working over the weekend to make repairs.

In addition to replacing about 80-feet of pipe, repairs are being made to damaged inlets and curbs. Once the repairs are completed, a section of the ramp will be repaved and restriped.

Repairs will continue through the week with the ramp expected to reopen before the morning commute on Thursday, March 19. Expect congestion and delays in the area.

The Detour:

  • Motorists wishing to take the ramp to I-287 southbound will be directed to continue on Route 23 southbound•
  • Take the next exit for I-287 northbound
  • Take the first exit for Route 23 northbound
  • Take the first exit for I-287 southbound

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website for real-time travel information.
