Bridge Projects Planned this Fall in Dover, Morris Twp., Netcong, and Rockaway Twp.
Two county road paving and improvement projects are set to start on the week Sept. 9 on sections of New Vernon Road in Long Hill and Dover-Rockaway Road in Rockaway Township.
Contracts have been awarded for both projects to contractor J.A. Alexander of Bloomfield for a 1.4-mile stretch of New Vernon Road, from Meyersville Road to the township border, and for a busy 0.4-mile segment of Dover Rockaway Road from East Blackwell Street to Route 46.
The county also is moving to finalize plans in the near future for paving and improvements to sections of the following roads: Drakesdale Road and Mount Olive/Flanders Road in Mount Olive, Landing Road in Roxbury, and Mendham Road in Mendham Township.
In addition, paving is expected to occur soon on Highview Avenue in Hanover Township and a small section of Littleton Road in Parsippany, from Parsippany Road to the area of Smith Road.
The first phase of a 1.1 mile milling and paving project has begun on North Passaic Street in Chatham Borough and Florham Park, where sidewalk work is underway. Milling and paving is expected soon on Comly Road/Ryerson Road in Lincoln Park and Pequannock, and for early September on East & West Dewey Avenue and North Main Street in Wharton.
This work is all part of the Board of Freeholders aggressive targeting of some 30 miles of county roads for upgrading this summer and fall. The county roadwork is in addition to local and state road projects.

On the bridge improvement front, work is nearing completion on the Black River Road bridge in Washington Township, which could re-open within the next two weeks, while work continues on the Crane Road bridge in Mountain Lakes.
Bids have been received for the Mill Road Bridge replacement project to be done later this year in Morris Township, and bids have been advertised for the planned East Blackwell Street bridge project in Dover. In addition, the county expects to move ahead with two more bridge projects this fall: Chestnut Terrace bridge in Rockaway Township and the bi-county Waterloo Road bridge at the Netcong and Stanhope border.
“This is an ambitious schedule of infrastructure work but maintaining our road and bridge network in Morris County is vital to our residents and businesses,’’ said Morris County Freeholder Stephen Shaw. “We will continue to work closely with our municipalities on all of these projects to minimize inconvenience to motorists.’’
