A Morris County bridge on Naughright Road in Washington Township has been closed due to problems discovered this afternoon during a municipal road milling and paving project that was being done by a township-hired contractor.
The situation was discovered at about 2 p.m. today by the contractor, whose crew was working on the bridge at the time, and township officials quickly contacted county government.
County engineers promptly responded to assess the damage, which was determined to be too extensive for an immediate repair. As a result, a decision was made to close the bridge.
Washington Township Police closed the bridge at Bartley Road and Fairview Ave and set up a detour. Police are allowing very local traffic to access homes in the vicinity.
Within the past month, Morris County officials entered into a contract with an engineering firm to begin design work that would lead to full replacement of this bridge. County officials will expedite a meeting with the engineering firm over the next few days to discuss the possibility of expediting that design.
