The Morris County Youth Shelter is looking for Adolescent Counselors who will be working with youth between the ages of 13 and 18. These youth are either victims of abuse or neglect or who have been charged with minor violations of the law.

The Adolescent Counselors are responsible for the direct supervision of the Shelter adolescent population. They assist socially, mentally and/or physically maladjusted adolescents by counseling and helping them deal effectively with problems while developing life skills. Additionally, they ensure the efficient and effective operation of the Shelter facility.

This position requires successful applicants to staff the facility on a 24 hour 365 days a year basis. Shift assignments are rotating between 7-3, 3-11 and 11-7 daily.

Duties may include:

  1. Observes, listens to, and counsels adolescents with their problems and assists them in dealing effectively.
  2. Counsels residents individually and/or in groups.
  3. Conducts short-term individual counseling in crisis situations.
  4. Assists in carrying out residential mentoring including personal hygiene, recreational activities and personal counseling.
  5. Assists adolescents in a behavior modification program to comply with facility rules.
  6. Performs field work such as taking adolescents on field trips, and visiting agencies to provide community services.
  7. Attends meetings to discuss problems and progress of individual adolescents, writes necessary reports, maintains security of the facility and maintains necessary records and files.


Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, Psychology, Education, or related field.

Appointees will be required to possess a valid driver’s license.

Starting Salary: $37,235.00
