The Morris County Park Commission will host its first annual Adult Classic figure skating exhibition this Sunday, May 7, at the Mennen Sports Arena in Morris Township.
The show will feature adults with a wide variety of experience — from beginners to more seasoned performers – who will take to the ice and show off what they have learned and practiced.
“I’m looking forward to seeing the performers get out there, enjoy themselves, and keep fit via skating,” said Mennen’s Figure Skating Director Jackie Kulik. “We’re all so health focused now, and it’s great to see adults choosing figure skating because it’s a sport that provides both physical and mental exercise.”
Morris County resident Jen Bauman has been training for the event as part of a group skating routine in Olympian JoJo Starbuck’s adult class. While Bauman has been skating her whole life, she only began taking lessons about two years ago.
“My kids are in school full time, and I thought it would be good exercise—and it was something I always wanted to do,” said Bauman, who will perform on Sunday.
As a show, there are no rules or restrictions—the focus is on entertaining the audience.
“That’s what brought me out of retirement,” says Jack Lipkin, a long-time recreational skater who first skated at Mennen Arena in 1987. “This is the perfect venue for adults, and I think we’re going to help encourage others to skate again or start skating for fun.”
The hour-long Adult Classic will run from 4-to-5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free.
Mennen Arena is located at 161 East Hanover Avenue in Morris Township. You can get more information about skating classes for adults/children by calling 973‑326-7651 or visit www.morrisparks.net.
