Notable Artist W. Carl Burger to be the First Award Recipient
The County College of Morris has instituted a new award, the New Jersey Master Artist Award, which will biannually recognize notable New Jersey artists who have an extensive record of exhibited mastery and service in the field of art and design.
CCM is recognizing W. Carl Burger as the first recipient of the award. Burger is currently holding his first solo art exhibition at CCM’s renovated Art and Design Gallery with 29 of his works on display.
“People tell me there’s a life and energy in my paintings that excites them, that they never tire of,” said Burger. “That’s because I love it — the best part of painting is while actually doing it.”
The award will be presented to Burger by CCM President Anthony J. Iacono at the opening reception of his exhibition at the CCM Art and Design Gallery on Wednesday (Nov. 9), from 6 – 8 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
His work has been exhibited at some of the most prestigious art institutions in the nation including the Lincoln Center, the National Academy of Design in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution, the Newark Museum, Montclair Museum, New Jersey State Museum and the Morris Museum.
Burger’s works are part of the permanent collections of British Airways, Warner Communications, American Telephone and Telegraph, Johnson & Johnson, Nabisco World Headquarters, Schering-Plough and Ortho Pharmaceuticals.
His exhibition runs through Jan. 20 at CCM’s Randolph campus, 214 Center Grove Road. Art and Design Gallery hours are Mondays and Wednesdays from noon to 5 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 8 p.m., Fridays, noon to 4 p.m., and the first Saturday of the month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
