The Morris County Park Commission is offering a unique series of traditional crafting classes at Historic Speedwell in Morristown starting this weekend, with everything from bookmaking to blacksmithing to be offered through September.
Historic Speedwell’s master classes are led by experts in their respective fields, who have dedicated their lives to traditional and lost arts of the past. Classes cover a variety of topics and all are hands-on, educational, and fun.
Mosaic Nightlight Master Class: Join artist Eleanor Parr-DiLeo on Saturday, May 7, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. as she demonstrates how to make a three-inch mosaic nightlight. Learn how to use glass nippers to cut glass into small pieces to form a unique pattern of your choosing. Take home your finished masterpiece to light up the night. The cost of this master class is $25 per person.
Hammerin’ Blacksmithing Master Class: Put your hands to work on Saturday, June 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., William Barrett, of Bill Barrett Custom Knives, leads a beginner blacksmithing class on basic blacksmithing technique. Prior experience will be helpful, but not necessary. Use the skills you learned to create a project to take home. This program is sponsored by the Friends of Historic Speedwell, and costs $30 per person..
Bookmaking Master Class: On Saturday, July 16, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., join artist Cindy Au-Kramer of Panda Paper, for an interesting modern perspective on the classic art of Bookmaking. In this Master Class, students use stone paper, a new material that cannot be ripped, is practically waterproof, and is made from stone and glue. This class is intended for artists ages 13 and older, is sponsored by the Friends of Historic Speedwell, and costs $30 per person.
Paper Marbleizing and Decoupage: Visit Historic Speedwell on Saturday, July 30, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., you are invited to explore the Victorian arts of decorating paper through marbleizing, and decorating small containers with decoupage. Cost is $10 per person.
Mosaic Trivet Master Class: Bring your creativity and join established artist Eleanor Parr-DiLeo on Saturday, August 13, from 2 p.m.to 5 p.m. as she teaches a Master Class in Mosaics. Learn the basics of cutting techniques, placement of tiles, and gluing to create a one-of-a-kind, six-inch trivet. No art or mosaic experience is required. This class is intended for artists ages 13 and older. Program cost is $30 per person.
Hammerin’ Two-Day Blacksmithing Master Class: Prepare to get a little dirty during the Hammerin’! master class on Saturday & Sunday, September 10 & 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. William Barrett, of Bill Barrett Custom Knives, leads this two-day intermediate blacksmithing class. This Master Class focuses on more advanced blacksmithing techniques. Prior experience is helpful, but not required. All supplies are provided and you can work on a project to take home. This class is intended for artists ages 13 and older, is sponsored by the Friends of Historic Speedwell, and costs $30 per person.
Open-Hearth Master Class with Susan McClellan: On Saturday, October 1, cook a full meal on the open hearth using period equipment, ingredients, and ‘receipts.’ This class is intended for participants 16 and older.
