A grant from the Morris County Preservation Trust has helped Morristown acquire two acres of property at 20 Hillcrest Ave in the town for future use as a neighborhood park.

The $254,000 grant from the open space portion of the county’s Preservation Trust program, combined with a $100,000 grant from New Jersey’s Green Acres program, will enable Morristown to significantly expand its open space, said Morristown Mayor Timothy P. Dougherty.

The mayor noted Morristown is one of the most urban and densely populated municipalities in Morris County.

The land will also contribute to protecting water sources in the Highlands Planning Area, since it sits on top of a critical groundwater recharge area for the town, Dougherty said.

After a house on the property is demolished, the town will begin work building a neighborhood playground and park.
