The Morris County Freeholders on Nov. 9 presented Morris County Distinguished
Military Service Medals to 10 veterans in recognition of their service to our country.
Since the freeholders began the program in 2000, more 9,000 medals have been presented to veterans or to their family members.
The veterans who were honored Wednesday were Bernice Haydu of Florham Park, a member of the World War II Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP); John Budzinsk of Lake Hiawatha, an Air Force veteran; Army veterans Joseph Richardson of Kinnelon and Donald Letts of Parsippany; George Lee of Lake Hopatcong, a veteran of the U.S. Navy; Marine veterans Thomas H. Westfield of Whippany and Jim Walsh of Morristown; Shirley A. Tappen of Parsippany, a veteran of the Women’s Army Corp (WAC); and Col. William Evers of Butler, a veteran of the New Jersey National Guard.
“The freeholders offer you a simple but heartfelt message – thank you for your service,” Freeholder Director William Chegwidden told the veterans being honored.
The freeholders also awarded a posthumous medal to Robert Franklin Lefferts V of Denville, an Army veteran who died suddenly earlier this year.
