The freeholders presented certificates of achievement to Katya Alexandra Reed of Troop 930 and Dorathea Elizabeth Lare of Troop 478. Both West Morris Central High School students were joined by family members at the ceremony, held at the Board of Freeholders May 11 meeting in Morristown, to celebrate the positive achievements of these young county residents.

The freeholders praised Reed and Lare for completing the service projects that earned them the Gold Award, which is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn in her scouting career.

“We are honored to present certificates to these young ladies who are future leader of our county and state,’’ said Freeholder Director Kathy DeFillippo. “The projects they completed to become Gold Award Scouts are quite impressive.

Reed’s project, which she called “Healing Haiti,’’ focused on improving the lives and health of disabled and ill Haitian orphans residing at Grace Children’s Hospital in Port au Prince, Haiti. She worked closely with her church, Trinity United Methodist Church, which sponsored her trip to Haiti to allow her to deliver wheelchairs to needy children. The chairs were purchased with money that she raised.

Lare’s project was an immersion for students into the fashion business, which involved planning and conducting four workshops to introduce high school students to various jobs in that industry. Her workshops included: Marketing and Business, Illustration, Accessories, and culminated in a Project Runway weekend finale.
